Class 2 time: reading clocks and calendars
Time is one of the most useful things a Class 2 child learns, and one of the most confusing at first — because a clock has two hands doing two different jobs. This topic settles that: reading the time to the hour and half hour, and finding their way around a calendar.
The trick children need is to look at the short hour hand first, then the long minute hand. Once they read the hands in that order, "o'clock" and "half past" stop being a guessing game.
What your child needs to know
- Read the time to the hour (o'clock) on a clock face
- Read the time to the half hour (half past)
- Know the short hand shows hours and the long hand shows minutes
- Name the days of the week and months of the year in order
- Work out a time a few whole hours later
Worked examples
The hour hand points to 3 and the minute hand points to 12. What is the time?
Hint — when the long hand is on 12, it is exactly o'clock.
The minute hand on 12 means o'clock, and the hour hand on 3 tells the hour. The time is 3 o'clock.
The minute hand points to 6 and the hour hand is just past 6. What is the time?
Hint — the long hand on 6 means half past.
The minute hand on 6 means half past, and the hour hand just past 6 tells the hour. The time is half past 6, also written 6:30.
School runs from Monday to Friday. How many school days is that?
Hint — count the days from Monday up to and including Friday.
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday — that is 5 days. A whole week has 7 days.
It is 4 o'clock now. What time will it be in 2 hours?
Hint — add the hours to the time shown.
4 o'clock + 2 hours = 6 o'clock.
How Olympiads test this
Olympiads such as SOF IMO and CREST CMO at Class 2 usually show a clock face and ask the time to the hour or half hour, or ask which clock matches a written time. Calendar questions — days of the week, months of the year, "what comes after Tuesday" — also appear. A real clock and calendar at home are the best practice; no page can say which questions an exam will use.
