Class 2 multiplication and division: times tables, grouping and sharing
Class 2 is where multiplication and division begin — gently. Children don't memorise every table at once. They learn that multiplication is just a fast way of adding equal groups, and that division is sharing those groups back out fairly.
Starting with the idea rather than the tables matters. A child who understands that 3 × 4 means "three groups of four" can always work it out, even on a day they can't recall the fact. That understanding is what makes the tables stick later.
What your child needs to know
- See multiplication as repeated addition of equal groups
- Use the 2, 5 and 10 times tables
- Read and draw arrays (rows and columns of dots)
- Share a number of objects equally between groups
- See division as making equal groups or sharing out
Worked examples
What is 3 × 4?
Hint — 3 × 4 means three groups of four. Add them.
Three fours is 4 + 4 + 4 = 12. You can also picture 3 rows of 4 dots and count them all.
Share 12 laddoos equally among 3 children. How many each?
Hint — give one to each child, then go round again, until they are gone.
Sharing 12 into 3 equal groups gives 4 in each group, because 12 ÷ 3 = 4. Each child gets 4 laddoos. Check: 4 + 4 + 4 = 12.
A tray has 2 rows of 5 sweets. How many sweets altogether?
Hint — this is an array: rows times how many in a row.
2 rows of 5 is 2 × 5 = 10 sweets. Turning the tray sideways gives 5 rows of 2, which is also 10 — the answer doesn't change.
How many pairs of shoes are there in 8 shoes?
Hint — a pair is a group of 2. How many groups of 2 fit in 8?
8 ÷ 2 = 4. There are 4 pairs, because 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 8.
How Olympiads test this
At Class 2 level, Olympiads such as SOF IMO and CREST CMO usually show multiplication and division as pictures of equal groups or arrays, or as simple sharing word problems. They may ask which addition matches a multiplication, or how many are in each group after sharing. The numbers stay small and friendly. Practising with real objects at home is the surest preparation — results in any particular exam can never be promised.
Practice questions
Show 5 practice questions and answers
- 2 × 6 — 12
- 10 × 3 — 30
- Share 15 sweets equally among 5 children. How many each? — 3
- Write 4 + 4 + 4 as a multiplication. — 3 × 4 = 12
- How many groups of 2 are there in 10? — 5
Inside Talyzo: World 3, Insects
Multiplication and division is World 3, set among insects — legs in equal groups, bees in neat rows, sharing leaves fairly. As with every world, each question carries a hint before the answer and a full explanation after, so equal groups become something a child can see, not just recite.
